Just 50 years ago, the vending industry was not a large player in the American economy. There were vending machines – mostly cigarettes and coffee – but the full potential of the industry hadn’t yet been realized.

That has all changed since the 1970s. Around that time, the demand for soft drinks and single-serving snacks in vending machines skyrocketed. As a result, the vending industry began to grow and develop.

Today, we can get a stunning variety of items from vending machines. The standard snacks and drinks are still available, but we can also buy books, small electronics, and personal care products from strategically placed vending machines.

Cigarette machines are rarely used anymore due to concerns about underage buyers. What other changes will vending undergo in the future? Perhaps someday we’ll be able to buy even stranger things from these silent servants.

Vending machines will continually be an untapped market because of their ease. They are easy for vendors to manage and they are easy for customers to use. On the vendor side, these machines can be placed at any location and only need minimal attention and care for emptying the money, filling with new items, and similar tasks. Several machines can be placed at different locations and still only require one stop per week, which may take just one day to hit all of the machines. For customers, vending machines offer an easy and practical way to get something that you want. If you want a little snack, a vending machine can get it for you. If you want a piece of gum, you can get that too. But, more importantly, you can usually get most of your items from a vending machine with the change in your pocket.

If you are looking for a part time side business or a full time business, you might want to consider vending snacks, beverages or bulk candy or gumballs from machines. You can purchase vending machines and contract with retailers or other businesses to place your machines in advantageous locations. Often, businesses such as grocery stores like to have soda machines on their front sidewalks. Alternatively, waiting rooms at automotive shops often want to make snacks available to clients while they are waiting for their repaired vehicles. Movie rental stores often like to have bubble gum machines near their checkout stands. Sometimes, employers at manufacturing shops want to offer their employees snacks and/or sodas so they may allow you to place a machine or two on their premises. If you want to make money by owning and servicing vending machines, you will not be short of opportunities.

The most cost effective way to go about purchasing a vending machine for your business is to purchase one that has been used. Then you must first decide what you want the machine to carry. Automated vendors are made to dispense a certain product; it is up to you to determine the nature of said product. Think about the clients you will be providing for, how many employees those companies have, and what size machine they might need. After that, decide what equipment you want to purchase. The equipment will either be electronic or mechanical. Know your skill level when it comes to repairing vending machines, as it is something for which you must take responsibility.

Vending machines have gone through many changes since they were first created in the late 1880s. Until recently, all vending machines required the use of coins or dollar bills; however, technological advancements have made it possible for consumers to purchase items from vending machine using their debit or credit cards. Another technological advancement that is being utilized is vending machines that have universal coin and bill acceptors. This will allow people to travel to different countries and still be able to use their own currency to purchase products from the vending machines. This is especially useful for individuals that travel a great deal because they will not have to carry several different forms of currency every time they go on a trip.

One of the most innovated additions to the vending industry has been the acceptance of telemetry. Telemetry is a technology that uses remote systems to report information to another source. Telemetry is the technology that allows consumers to use their credit and debit cards to make vending machine purchases. One of the reasons why telemetry has been such an important advancement is that there have been several studies performed that show that over fifty percent of consumers will not make a purchase from a vending machine if the “use correct change only” sign is lit. Vending machines that use telemetry technology can read the consumers credit or debit card and transmit the information to routing stations to ensure that there are funds present to make the sale.

Many older styles of vending machines have the potential to not dispense a product after it has been paid for. In these instances, many consumers will hit, kick or rock the vending machine to try to dislodge the product that they paid for. In some instances, consumers would be injured because the vending machine would fall. Vending machines that are more modern have safety measures installed to prevent injuries. Many vending machines have lasers located across the door where the product is to be dispensed. If the laser beam is not broken by the falling product, the spirals that hold the product will continue to turn until the product is dispensed. If for some reason the product still is not dispensed, the machine will instantly give the consumer a refund.
